Gapminder - Elements (2024)

The second album from this band from Norway.

The band was a seven piece big band with a lineup of drums, bass, guitars, piano and vocals.

I reviewed their 2021 debut album Haematoma earlier this month and that was a decent album. Too pedestrian ambient at times and that was my main gripe with that album.

The band returned again some months ago with Elements, a forty minutes long vinyl and digital album.

The band's music can still be labeled as post-rock and shoegaze. That is not the full story, though.

Add in some dream-pop and cinematic rock too and you get a mix of gloomy and beautiful music.

Gloom and beauty is what we get here. The music blends in nicely these two contrasting elements into something that reminds me about both dirges and hymns.

The post-rock guitars and the female voices adds a lot to these pieces of slow music.

This album is indeed a massive improvement on their debut album and one of the better albums from Norway anno 2024. My only gripe here is the lack of a great tune or two.

That said... this is a very good album which deserves a lot more attention. I am pretty impressed.
