Voivod - Angel Rat (1991)

The sixth album from this band from Canada.

The band was a trio with a lineup of drums, guitars, keyboards and vocals.

Some guests added keyboards, bass, synths and computer programming.

The band was now reduced to a trio and had lost the bass player. That is not the only major change here...

The band has ditched the speed and thrash metal we can find on their first five albums. Angel Rat is a major, major break with those five albums and their history.

Take a bit grunge, add progressive metal, hard rock, indie rock and progressive rock.

There is a lot of Rush in their music now. That's not only because this album was produced by the, then, regular Rush producer Terry Brown.

In short, my jaw dropped to the floor when I heard this album for the first time.

The vocals and the sound is good though.

And so is the music. It is at times bordering to being very good.

This is an album well worth checking out. Voivod is a brave band with their own, independent mindset. I can only applaud them for that and that is added value.
