Smalltape - The Ocean (2017)

The second album from this German band/project.

The band was a sextet on this album with a lineup of drums, percussion, bass, guitars, keyboards, piano, saxophones and vocals.

The owner of this project is Philip Nespital and he plays most of the instruments here and does the vocals. The project has just released a new album and I decided to review this album before the new album.

A good choice indeed.

The music on this album is a mix of art-rock and neo-prog. It is very much in the German neo-prog tradition although not all music here is neo-prog.

This seventy-three minutes long album gives us some varied music and visits some genres. From jazz to neo-prog, art-rock and arty pop music.

The music is very elegant at times.... well, throughout this album. Even the pretty long sidestep into pure playful jazz is very elegant.

The music really takes the listener on a journey and that is a good journey.

This is indeed a good album and I hope we will hear a lot more from this project in the coming years.
