Hashshashin - Badakhshan (2019)

The second album from this band from Australia.

The band was a trio with a lineup of didgeridoo, percussion, Morocco drums, drums, bass, sitar, bouzouki, guitars, rabab and setor.

A guest added violin on some tracks.

The band set out to do post-rock and instrumental prog far away from the US and UK tradition. That they tried, and a bit failed, to do on their decent enough 2016 debut album Ninshahshah.

This time around, their take on their mix of post-rock and instrumental prog is very much coloured and driven by the sounds of Pakistan, Afghanistan (where music is now totally forbidden, btw), Pamir and Morocco.

The result is both grim and colourful at the same time. The deserts meets a rose garden.

It is fair to say that the music here is really exotic. Nevertheless, the music is still mostly post-rock and this is mainly a post-rock album. But with a twist and a lot of added quality.

The result is one of the better post-rock albums I have ever encountered in my life and up there with the Sigor Ros albums.

This is indeed a good album and one to check out.
