Borknagar - Epic (2004)

The sixth album from this band from Norway.

The band was a quartet with a lineup of drums, percussion, bass, guitars, piano, organ, synths and vocals.

The band returned again after at three years long break.

Their 2001 album Empiricism was a pretty melodic epic black metal album. It had some good songs too and it really sold well too. A commercial and critical success in other words.

Hence the scene was set for more of the same.

It seems like the band had retreated more into the black metal scene and sound on Epic. This album has a lot of harsh black metal music and vocals.

The more melodic stuff here sounds a bit of an afterthought and not as well integrated into their take on black metal as on the previous two albums.

There is no real good songs here either and the band runs on fumes here instead of the proper fuel.

This is a decent enough album but still a step or two backwards. This album is a bit of a disappointment.
