Southern Empire - Another World (2023)

The third album from this band from Australia.

The band was a quintet with a lineup of drums, bass, lap steel guitar, guitars, keyboards, programming and vocals.

Half a dozen of guests added woodwinds, violin, flute, guitars, vocals and narration.

This band was formed by Sean Timms, the leading light in the Australian prog rock scene, after the demise of Unitopia, one the best ever bands from down under.

Southern Empire has on the first two albums claimed this crown and their claim has been a strong one.

Another World gives us a mix of pomp rock and neo-prog. There is also some AOR, art-rock and progressive metal here.

It is my understanding that this is a rock opera and there is indeed some musicals sounding music here. This album also includes a pretty long neo-classical piece.

The music is very epic and bold. It has a symphonic prog feel too.

The music is also very good and it ticks most of the classic album boxes. Some of the songs could have been better. Nevertheless, this is a very good album from the best band down under.

3.5 points
