Enslaved - Vertebrae (2008)

The tenth album from this band from Norway.

The band was a quintet on this album with a lineup of drums, bass, guitars, organs, synths and vocals.

Ronnie Le Tekro from TNT added a guitar solo on one of the tracks and another guest added some electronics.

Enslaved started out as a viking extreme metal band before they started to adopt a lot of progressive rock.

With the exeptions from their demo tapes, Enslaved has always sounded progressive in my ears. That with the possible exception of their Frost album. Vikingr Veldr was very progressive.

So their mix of prog rock and extreme metal on their last four albums was not a big shock to me.

Vertebrae continues in the same vein. A lot of interesting details, a lot of ultra-fast viking metal with some progressive rock in the vein of both King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator.

The Van Der Graaf Generator influences on this rather muddy produced album is pretty evident here. The vocals is still a mix of viking and clean vocals.

The music is still fascinating and good. The music is still relevant and Enslaved is still in their own genre and class.

Check out this album.
