Broers + Klazinga - Burdens of the Mind (2021)

The debut album from this band from The Netherlands.

The band was a duo of the keyboards players Jacob Broers and Gerben Klazinga.

They had help on this album from some guests who added drums, bass, guitars, cello, grand piano, keyboards and vocals.

I became aware of this band through my usual channel..... ProgArchives. A band who has so far released two albums. Both of them will be reviewed in this blog, the newest one sometimes next week.

The band is a duo of two keyboards players and that made me think I was about to be confronted by a neo-prog take on ELP.

Wrong.

The music here is a mix of melodic symphonic prog and neo-prog. There are also some art-rock influences here.

The music is melodic, but also pretty bombastic at times. There is a lot of interesting details here. There is also some good baroque classical music references and some ELP references.

The vocals are very good and this one hour long album comes complete with some very good guitars solos too. The band does a good job and very much complements the keyboards. Keyboards which is not that prominent. The two musicians has showed a great deal of self-discipline as they have chosen melody over their own egoes, this urge to bombard the music with their own keyboards.

The result is indeed a good album and a very promising debut album. This duo may become one of the stars on the prog metal scene if they continues like this and writes some better songs.
