The debut album from this band from Norway.
The band is a trio with a lineup of drums, bass, guitars and vocals.
This band is Svein Hovland's new band. Forty years ago, I was a big fan of his first band Blind Date, a pop/rock band who released two albums before they broke up.
Svein has again teamed up with his brother Frank on a new band... Toy Weather. Frank is on bass and Svein is on vocals and guitars. Their friend Rune Kogstad is on drums.
Appolon, their record label, gave this album to me and told me Svein and the band was big Van Der Graaf Generator fans and that this album was very influenced by them.... as in (almost) copycats. That gave me a high bloodpressure as I am a fan of that band.
The music on this album is a mix of pop and art-rock. And there is indeed some strong Peter Hammill influences in their music. But they are far, far from being Van Der Graaf Generator copycats. That band used saxophones as a part of their sound. Toy Weather does not.
Nevertheless.... there are still some Van Der Graaf Generator influences and moods here. The music is dark and Svein's vocals is at times pretty close to Peter's vocals.
The music is art-rock though and these forty minutes of music have a mix of decent and good songs. This is an acceptable debut album. I hope we will hear more from band. Check out this album (available on Bandcamp) if a poppy take on Peter Hammill's music floats your boat.
