Embryo - Opal (1970)

The debut album from this band from Germany.

The band was a quartet with a lineup of drums, percussion, bass, guitars, flute, saxophone and vocals.

A handful of guests provided motocello, bongos, bass and female vocals.

Embryo was a fusion/psych band who are still around. I got around ten of their albums and will review them in this blog.

Opal is a psych jazz album. That is the best label I can put on this album.

There is some Gong, Soft Machine and general German mad offbeat krautrock influences on this album.

There is a lot of saxophones here on some rather weird psych tunes. The jazz also comes in on regular intervals.

This is a really weird album but most of it makes a lot of sense.

There is indeed some good music here although some of the music falls a bit short.

This is a decent to good debut album and well worth checking out.
