Abacus - Highland Warrior (2021)

The eight album from this band from Germany.

The band was a quintet with a lineup of drums, percussion, bass, guitars, keyboards and vocals.

A female vocalist added vocals.

This is the latest album from this band from Germany. A band who has so far been all over the place when it comes to muscular, melodic art-rock.

We get a concept album about highland warriors in Scotland. I live in Scotland so this is right up my alley.

Here is an observation: Abacus is a through and through German, teutonic band. This is now dawning on me when I am listening to this album. When going back to their first seven albums, that is also the case. Whatever type of music and themes this band record and publish, it has got this teutonic, German identity.

Hence, my thoughts are wandering off to krautrock and German heavy/power/speed metal. There is indeed the same identity running through these genres. Add Abacus to this list, too.

Their take on Scotland and the highland warrior has one leg in Bavaria and the other leg in the Scottish highlands. No matter how much female vocals in gaelic (the language in the Scottish highlands) they add  to this, in essential German rock album.

The music is melodic art-rock and the quality is decent enough. Fifty minutes of decent music is what we get here on this concept album. The art of good song writing has completely eluded this band and this album. That is my gripe with this album, I am afraid.
