The ninth album from this band from Canada.
The band was a trio with a lineup of drums, bass, accordion, guitars, electronics and vocals.
Two guests added electronics.
Voivod had gone from thrash/speed metal to psych rock and then back to thrash metal and industrial metal on their last two albums.
Phobos sees the band go eclectic as in King Crimson and a lot industrial and cyber metal.
There is also a lot of electronica here. The music is really extreme. That means also extreme as in extreme metal.
The riffs and themes are anything but standard metal riffs. Most of them are twisted and pretty dissonant. The same goes for the vocals.
Voivod has really pushed the boat out here. But the music really works and that big time. The music is very good and that also includes their version of the King Crimson classic 21st Century Schizoid Man.
Phobos is one heck of a revelation.
