Quaterna Requiem - Quasimodo (1994)

The second album from this band from Brazil.

The band was a duo on this album with a lineup of drums, percussion and keyboards.

A handful of guests added their bass, guitars, crumhorn, recorder and Gregorian chants.

The band also goes under the name Wierman & Vogel.... just to confuse everyone.

I very much liked their 1990 debut album Velha Gravura. A good mix of neo-classical and symphonic prog.

The band continues on the same theme on Quasimodo.

The album is a very long one, clocking in at seventy-four minutes.

The music is again not too disimilar to what The Enid did at their best. The difference is that Quaterna Requem is more clued up to ancient church music and uses church organs a lot. Church organs generated by keyboards.

The music here is very complex. Complex but not as bombastic as expected. There is also a lot of electric guitars here which takes the music towards ELP territory too.

This, and the previous album, is very much drawing on classical music both when it comes to inspirations and when it comes to creating the music.

The quality is good throughout. This album is well worth checking out.
