The second album from this band from Norway.
The band was a quintet with a lineup of drums, bass, guitars, synths and vocals.
This band was and still is a progressive black metal band and one of the biggest ones in this scene.
I reviewed their 1996 self-titled debut album back in June 2009 for ProgArchives and you can read the review here. It was my plan then to review all their albums up to that date and continue to review Borknagar albums on their release. That did not happen and it is only now I will start to review the rest of their albums. Reviews will be published on a regular basis this winter and next spring.
The Olden Domain is still very much a black metal album. It is not as raw as old style black metal, though. There is a lot of viking metal influences here too.
Their music has been described as a more black metal focused version of Enslaved's music and that is exactly what we get here.
The music is heavy and pretty raw. The rasping black metal vocals from Garm in Ulver is prominent here. The music is pretty epic but still true to the black metal formula.
The music is decent enough and it proved that the band has both talent and quality. This is an album well worth checking out.
