The debut album from this band from USA.
The band was a quintet with a lineup of drums, percussion, bass, guitars, violins, keyboards and flute.
This short lived band released two albums before they split up. Two albums on a small record label and both got next to no attention. That is still the case as there is hardly any reviews of these two albums.
I am reviewing both albums in the coming days.... starting with this one.
This three quarters of an hour long album can best be described as a crossover between Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever. Crucially....that without the excellent musicianships those two bands included and traded on.
The musicians in Flying Island is great. But the musicians and the pieces of music in those two abovementioned bands were brilliant and on a different planet. That is the crucial difference between this album and their albums.
Flying Island is still an album fans of fusion and pure great musicianship should check out. The music is good throughout and this is a very enjoyable album. This band and this album deserve a heck of a lot more attention and respect.
