Popol Vuh - Popol Vuh (1972)

The debut album from this band from Norway.

The band was a sextet with a lineup of drums, percussion, bass, guitars, electric piano, moog, mellotron, trombone, flute and vocals.

This band released four albums before they gave up the ghost. The first two albums under the name Popol Vuh and then the final two albums under the name Popol Ace. This was off course after the German band Popol Vuh objected to their use of this name.

Popol Vuh/Ace also had a vocalist, Jahn Teigen, who later became a Norwegian national treasure. He passed away some years ago. Btw... Becoming a national treasure in Norway also happened to Prudence's vocalist.

I got the four Popol Vuh/Ace albums up for review this summer.

The art-work is iconic and far more known than the music of this band. That is my start point.

The music itself is a mix of psych rock, art-rock and symphonic prog. Fruupp, Jethro Tull, King Crimson and Gentle Giant is some good references. But most of all, this is vintage rock and a band with their own style.

The vocals is very good and pretty operatic male. There are some good songs here and some decent songs here. This album is more iconic than a really good album. It is an album fans of Norwegian prog or Norwegians into prog rock must have in their collection.
